LumiDatis is a spin-off company established in 2015 at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń as a response to a growing demand to determine absolute age of samples using objective test methods from different branches of science.


We have access to the latest testing instruments (e.g. gamma radiation spectrometer with HPGe detector and Risø stimulated luminescence reader) to guarantee the highest repeatability of the results.


The company is led by the President of the Board, Paweł Matlakiewicz. The research team includes scientists from the Institute of Physics at the Nicolaus Copernicus University, Alicja Chruścińska Ph.D., Krzysztof Przegiętka Ph.D. and Piotr Palczewski Ph.D. with recognized achievements in research and use of luminescence dating verified by multiple academic publications and commercial orders.


The following items can be dated:

- Quaternary deposits,

- antique ceramics (pottery, sanitary ware, china etc.).

A physical basis for luminescence dating differs from the radioisotope dating methods including radiocarbon dating (C-14). Luminescence dating relies on specific properties of the minerals and covers a period of several dozen years to several hundred thousand years. The determined age relates to the last exposure to the sunlight (material transport and deposit sedimentation) or the last sintering (ceramics sintering in the production process) in the history of the dated object. A dynamic development of luminescence dating methods resulted in new techniques, opening up new fields of potential applications and allowing to determine the chronology of specific episodes in the history of dated items (e.g. secondary sintering due to the fire, reusing bricks from older structures etc.).


Current projects

2016-2017:  Determining OSL age of 150 samples of Quaternary deposits for the Polish Geological Institute.
